Pontifical Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus de Candeias

Built in 1797, the Pontifical Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus de Candeias was one of the 18th century pilgrimage centers that drew countless pilgrims from the most diverse locations in western Minas in search of graces and miracles before the venerated image of Senhor Bom Jesus. It received the title of Pontifical Sanctuary by Pope Gregory XVI, in 1834. Stage of glorious jubilees, it is a living landmark of Candeense memory that allows the analysis and understanding of the social, religious and cultural formation of the city. Listed as a Historic and Artistic Heritage of Candeias, it has undergone a restoration process since 2017 and had, on Saturday night (13), its reopening and blessing.

The work, promoted and implemented by the parish priest, Revmo. Foot. Wellington Mendes Alves, had the valuable help of the entire parish community that effectively participated in this endeavor. The first aspect to be restored, the collateral altarpieces, built in 1919, by João Teixeira from Cande, and polychromed by Ângelo Pagnacco, an Italian artist who worked and left works signed in this region of Minas Gerais. Subsequently, the restoration of the grand tribune began. In the process, under four layers of paint, the original painting was found, made in marble.
